Dr. Katsuto Takenaka

Katsuto Takenaka, MD, PhD is Professor of Hematology at Ehime University Graduate School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Kyushu University and completed his residency training in internal medicine at Kyushu University of Medical School.

In 2000, he moved to Canada where he did postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Dr. John Dick at the Ontario Cancer Institute in Toronto. He contributed to better understanding of immunodeficient mouse model for human leukemia stem cell assay and the molecular basis of leukemia stem cells (Nat Immunol 2007 and Nat Med 2011). In 2005, Dr. Takenaka returned to Japan and started working at Kyushu University Hospital as an Associate Professor in the Division of Hematology/Oncology. Later in 2012, he became Associate Professor in Center for Cellular and Molecular Medicine. He assumed a new position as Associate Professor in Division of Hematology, Oncology and Cardiovascular Medicine. In 2018, he joined Ehime University Graduate School of Medicine as the Professor in Department of Hematology, Clinical Immunology and Infectious Disease.

Dr. Takenaka’s major research interests are related to myeloproliferative neoplasms, especially for the isolation of malignant stem cells using xenograft models. He has recently published the data of a long-term nationwide survey of the patients with primary myelofibrosis in Japan (Int J Hematol 2017).
